One night at the hospital, I heard a woman weeping.

I’d woken up in the middle of the night again and had been sitting on a tree stump, looking at the stars. I heard the faint voice of a woman crying in the night breeze. The wind threaded between the trees and drifted into the infirmary. I assumed it was the wind. I looked up at the stars again. The Southern Cross was low in the sky, and only the coal bag was visible among the scattered clouds. Then came the weeping again. I squinted toward the darkness between the trees. There was no one there. I listened intently and realized the weeping was not coming from the jungle but from the infirmary behind me. From somewhere near my bed.

And then, it made sense. It was my soul weeping for the sad bastard staring at the stars, alone, I thought. I went to the veranda, pulled back the shade, and peered inside.

Sanada was curled in bed, weeping in the light of the moon. I took several breaths, unable to move. Finally, I let go of the shade and went back to the stump.

As I took in the night breeze, my heart was pounding.

Why had Sanada been weeping that night? I do not know. Nor will I ever.
